About the Brand

Childhood is the most ordinary magic there is. It is muddy knees and afternoon naps. A dress that twirls just right. A fabric so soft you forget you're wearing it.

How It Started

Erde began with my daughter, Niva.

When she was born, something shifted in the way I looked at the world — and at clothes. I became particular. I wanted fabrics that felt genuinely soft against her skin. Natural. Breathable. Light enough for the heat of an Indian summer, but made with the kind of care that shows — and holds.

I had spent fifteen years working in international garment manufacturing — understanding fabric, construction, finish, and what separates a well-made piece from one that merely looks the part. That knowledge made me more exacting, not less.

I travelled for work and would always bring pieces back for her — clothes that felt considered, beautifully finished, built to last through seasons of real wear. Every time I came home, I felt the gap more sharply.

India had incredible craft. It had artisans who could create things of genuine beauty. But children's clothing that brought those two things together — natural fabrics and artisan hands, beautiful to look at and practical for real life — was surprisingly hard to find.

That gap quietly became an obsession.

Why should a parent have to choose between a garment that feels good and one that looks beautiful? Why should comfort come at the cost of craft?

Erde grew from that question.

What We Make

Handmade kids clothing in natural fabrics, made in India.

Every Erde piece is designed in India and made by skilled artisans in small, intentional batches.

We use natural fabrics throughout — 100% cotton, cotton denim, cotton jacquard, viscose, flannel, corduroy — chosen specifically for India's climate. Breathable in the heat. Soft against young skin. No synthetic base fabrics in any garment we make.

We choose fabrics that soften and improve with every wash — not ones that look beautiful once and fade fast. The embroidery, smocking, and trim on every piece is made to last through the kind of wear that childhood demands.

Because each piece is made by hand, small variations in embroidery placement or smocking tension are not imperfections. They are the honest mark of something genuinely made — a level of craft and character that small-batch production makes possible. No two pieces are ever exactly the same, and that is exactly as it should be.

We produce in small batches deliberately. It means we can be careful about what we make. It means every piece that leaves us has been thought about, not just manufactured.

What Drives Us

The standards of a mother who cares. The verdict of a child who just wants to feel good.

I think about the mothers who buy Erde. They notice things. They run a finger along a seam. They check what a fabric feels like before they commit. They want to know it will hold — through washing, through wearing, through the particular energy children bring to everything they love.

I also think about Niva. She continues to be my most honest test. If she reaches for it without being asked, it has passed. If she wants to wear it two days in a row, it has definitely passed. If she is still wearing it twelve months later and it still looks like itself — that is the standard we design to.

Erde is shaped by both of those things — the standards of a mother who cares, and the verdict of a child who just wants to feel good.

We hear this reflected back to us. Mothers who write to say a dress survived two years of wear and still looks like itself. Families who come back season after season because they felt the difference the first time. Children who refuse to take a piece off. These are not the things we designed for — they are the things that tell us the design worked.

Care & Practicality

Beautiful clothing needs to be washable clothing.

Every piece in érde Everyday is designed to be cared for at home — machine washed cold, dried in shade, ironed on low where needed. No dry-clean-only pieces. No fabrics that punish you for living in them.

For érde Atelier's festive lurex and jacquard pieces, we recommend a dry clean for the first wash, followed by gentle hand washing. The elevated craft deserves a little more care — and it repays it. Full guidance for every fabric is on our Care Instructions page →

Built Around India's Seasons

Designed for the real rhythm of childhood in India.

The long warm months that call for light, breathable cotton. The festive season that arrives with colour and occasion. The cooler months that ask for something with texture and genuine warmth. Each collection is designed with the child's full day in mind — not just the photograph at the start of it.

A Note From Me

“Erde began with Niva — and it continues because of every family that has chosen to bring one of our pieces into their home.

We are small by choice. What that gives us is attention — to the fabric, to the finish, to the fit, to the family on the other side of every order.

That is the promise I made when I started this, and it is the one I intend to keep.”
